Sonja Lindgren, MSS, LCSW

Sonja Lindgren, MSS, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker.  She is a 1994 graduate of the Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research and a 1985 graduate of Brown University.  She is an experienced psychotherapist, having worked for The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, The Belmont Center for Comprehensive Treatment, Introspect of Buxmont, MENTOR (a therapeutic foster care program), and most recently Main Line Clinical Associates.  She had a previous career in publishing and also taught in Zimbabwe in 1989-1990.  Ms. Lindgren opened a private practice in Wayne, Pennsylvania, in July 2006.

Ms. Lindgren enjoys working with clients of all ages.  She has worked with clients as young as four and as old as ninety-two.  She has inpatient, outpatient, and school experience working with elementary-age school children, and inpatient and outpatient experience working with adolescents.  She is familiar with the adolescent issues of peer struggle, self-esteem, body image, stress, school phobia, eating disorders, and self-injury.  In work with young people, she employs the modalities of talk therapy, family therapy, play therapy, and aspects of cognitive-behavioral therapy.  Ms. Lindgren is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a well-researched therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder that also appears effective for treating depressing and anxiety, especially when they result from trauma.  EMDR is an exciting therapy that can provide relief from stubborn symptoms that do not resolve with talk therapy, as it addresses mind, body, and emotion simultaneously, and it has been shown to work more quickly than traditional psychotherapy.  Ms. Lindgren has worked with many couples and families to reduce conflict and deepen relationships.  She believes that relationships provide a path for growth and that her job is to help clients develop healthy relationships with the self, their families, and the community.
